The CHAPS conferences provide a platform for the community to engage in issues regarding overall health, nutrition and fitness. The conferences offer a variety of different activities, which are commenced by a keynote speech, followed by guest speakers who share their backgrounds, perspectives, and knowledge with our group. The panel discussions are followed by activities, such as food drives.
The Children's Health Awareness Program in Schools partnered with the GWU American Medical Physiology Club (AMPC) and the GWU American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative for our 4th health conference! The goal of this conference was to provide a platform for diverse fields and sectors, weaving unique and different perspectives in our community, to find innovative solutions for the most pressing health issues today - such as childhood obesity and lung cancer. After the panel discussions, students engaged in a mini-hackathon. The ultimate goal of the hackathon was to choose a topic discussed by any one of the speakers, and develop a blueprint or a design (in a presentation or document form) of an app or a technological device, to find a solution for that issue and help advance the field.
CHAPS 2018 was our third annual health conference. A Local congresswomen, a health expert, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services, and a community service and charitable organization shared their experiences and recent community research on childrens' health, nutrition, and fitness. We introduced a new CHAPS initiative called "Dance for Health" or "DAfoH". We had a session on introducing a dance segment to the group to get the audience moving! There was a healthy food drive, a raffle, and many more fun activities which got audience involved.
CHAPS 2016 was held on October 22nd, 2016 and was an interactive health conference which aimed to enable and empower our local community to make healthier choices through education, creating awareness and practice. We aimed for students attending local middle and elementary schools to learn how to make healthy choices, the importance of children's health, and prevention of childhood obesity. Guest speakers included Senator Barbara A. Favola, Senator Jennifer Boysko, dietitian Nour Zibdeh, personal trainer Jermey Scott, and hygienist Yhomara Warshavsky.
CHAPS 2015 was a resounding success and provided a platform for healthcare experts and other leaders to share their ideas and thoughts on healthy living with children. We thank Patrick A. Hope, Delegate of the Virginia General Assembly, for the keynote speech and valuable time, and Dr. Nair, Nurse Carolyn, and Dr. Hemani for their innovative ways of educating children about their health. Also, a thank you to Study Concepts Inc. for letting us use their premises to hold our event and our sponsors for their support. Thank you to all the children and parents for their attendance and participation.
